Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

EC number: 270-071-2 | CAS number: 68409-99-4 A complex combination of hydrocarbons produced by the distillation of products from the catalytic cracking process. It consists of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly in the range of C3 through C5 and boiling in the range of approximately -48°C to 32°C (-54°F to 90°F).

Description of key information
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Skin sensitisation
Link to relevant study records
- Endpoint:
- skin sensitisation: in vitro
- Data waiving:
- study technically not feasible
- Justification for data waiving:
- other:
Reference
Endpoint conclusion
- Endpoint conclusion:
- no study available
- Additional information:
In accordance with Section 2 of REACH Annex XI, studies on skin sensitisation do not need to be conducted as members and constituents of the Other Petroleum Gases category are flammable gases at room temperature. No studies have been conducted on skin sensitisation and there are no indications from repeat dose studies or the published literature that any of the gases cause skin sensitisation.
Short description of key information:
There are no data on skin sensitisation and no indications that members or main constituents of Other Petroleum Gases are skin sensitisers. All are flammable gases at room temperature and therefore studies on skin sensitisation are waived.
Justification for selection of skin sensitisation endpoint:
These streams are gases at room temperature, hence testing for skin sensitisation potential is not technically feasible.Category streams containing >0.1% benzene:
As benzene is a mutagen and a carcinogen, human exposure is minimised by the implementation of appropriate risk management measures. Benzene is produced and used under strictly controlled conditions.
There is no evidence from animal experimental inhalation studies, or from human experience, to indicate that benzene is a respiratory sensitiser.
Respiratory sensitisation

- Endpoint:
- respiratory sensitisation, other
- Data waiving:

- Justification for data waiving:

Endpoint conclusion
- Endpoint conclusion:
- no study available
- Additional information:
No respiratory sensitisation studies have been conducted on members or main constituents of the Other Petroleum Gases category and there are no indications from other studies to suggest they cause respiratory sensitisation. Furthermore, there is a long history of the commercial use of Other Petroleum Gases and there are no reports from the available literature of respiratory sensitisation.
Short description of key information:
No studies have been conducted but there no indications that members or main constituents of Other Petroleum Gases are respiratory sensitisers.
Justification for classification or non-classification
There is no indication that members or main constituents of the Other Petroleum Gases category cause skin or respiratory sensitisation.
Category streams containing >1% benzene are not skin or respiratory sensitisers and does not warrant labelling under(EC) No 1272/2008 of the European Parliament.
