Skin irritation: not irritating

Several studies on human skin irritation are available for D-Glucose, reaction products with alcohols C16-18 (even numbered) (excess) (30% C16/C18-APG and 70% C16/C18 fatty alcohols).

In a key study according to the COLIPA Guidelines for the Assessment of Skin Tolerance of Potentially Irritant Cosmetic Ingredients, a single application closed patch epicutaneous test under occlusion was performed in 20 male and female, healthy volunteers for a period of 24 h to determine the skin irritating potential of the test substance for the evaluation of skin compatibility (Henkel, 1997). The test substance at 20% AS in cosmetic alcohol was applied to an occlusive patch and placed on the back of the volunteers. Skin reactions were scored for 6, 24, 48 and 72 h after exposure the test substance. Two moderate erythema and slight scaling were observed among the volunteers. The mean scores after 6, 24, 48 and 72 h were 0.2 for erythema and 0.45 for erythema, oedema, scaling and fissure. The skin compatibility of the test substance at 20% AS compared to 1% AS Texapon N25 and 0.5% AS sodium dodecyl sulphate was good.

In further studies according to the single application closed patch test method, the test substance at active component contents of 1, 1.5, 3, 5, 6, 10% in cosmetic alcohol was not irritating to human skin and showed a good to very good skin compatibility.

In a repeated application closed patch test for 48 and 72 h, which was equivalent or similar to the COLIPA guideline, the test substance at 10% AS in cosmetic alcohol caused slight erythema (2 times) and scaling (9 times), respectively (Henkel, 1996). The mean score after 6, 24, 48 and 72 h was 0.10 for erythema and 0.75 for erythema, oedema, scaling and fissure. The skin compatibility of the test substance compared to demineralised water and a blank patch without filter paper was very good.
