Description of key information

Potassium isopentyl dithicarbonate is a flammable solid.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
highly flammable

Additional information

There is enough evidence on the decomposition of the substance that it emits flammable gases such as carbon disulphide and hydrogen sulphide. The decomposition takes place thermally and also when the substance is in contact with water. It is not self-igniting and needs ignition source to burn, and thereafter it burns quickly (seconds). However, based on the flammability testing in contact with water this substance is not flammable. This study was conducted according to EU A.12 in accordance with GLP.

According on these findings the substance is classified as flammable solid Cat 2 (H228) as water (wetted zone) stops the propagation of the flame. No additional flammable solid testing is needed.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Potassium isoamyl xanthate is classified as Flammable Solid Cat 2 (H228) according to CLP 1272/2008 and F; R11 according to 67/548/EEC.
