Method: other: testing in concentrations of 0.1 % and 1.0 % in ethanol (70 %), 10 control persons. During a period of one year, a48-year-old chemist was doing some experimental work to produce game-tocides for the prevention of cross pollination in the agricultural industry. he was working with some intermediate products including epichlorhydrin, benzylamine and benzyl-1-amino-3 chloro-2-hydroxy-propane. Shortly after contact with these materials, he developed a dermatitis of both hands and face. After stopping his work, the dermatitis subsided within a few days. he had an atopic constitution with a history of hay fever. Intracutaneous tests to some inhalants including house-dust, grass polen and animal dender were positive. reactions to patch tests with the ICDRG series, including epoxy resin, showed weak reaktion to formaldehyde. patch tests to epichlorhydrine 0.01% and 0.1% in acetone were negative. However, the reactions to benzylamine and benzyl-1-amino-3 chloro-2-hydroxypropane were positive. Both materials dissolved in ethanol 70% were tested in concentrations of 0.1% and 1%. 10 control persons showed negative reactions to these chemicals.Although benzylamine is known as a strong irritant, the reactions to benzylamine and benzyl-1-amino-3 chloro-2-hydroxypropane may be considered as allergic reactions. The positive reactions are probably a manifestion of cross-sensitivity.
