Description of key information

PFBE has only moderate affinity for sediment (measured log Koc = 2.96 Koc = 903). It is a highly volatile liquid of low water solubility. Volatilisation from the aquatic environment is expected to be an important fate process, based on the estimated Henry's law constant (3 -100 atm.m3/mol) and this compound's high vapour pressure (22 kPa at 20°C). Consequently detectable concentrations will be hard to achieve in the aquatic enviroment.
The Annex IX requirement for biodegradation in water and sediment simulation testing is waved since direct and indirect exposure of the aquatic comparment and sediment is not likely. Moreover, because of volatility considerations a biodegradation test in surface water would not be feasible. (See the document PFBE: REACH Annex IX waivers for Degradation and Fate and Behaviour in the Environment. Blue Frog Scientific Limited. Attached to Section 5 Summary Environmental Fate and Pathways)
