Description of key information

In a 28-day closed bottle test, PFBE (3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,6-nonafluorohexene) was biodegraded by 15.9%. This result indicated that PFBE is not readily biodegradable in water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The biodegradability of PFBE (3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,6-nonafluorohexene), dissolved in 1,4-dioxan, was investigated over a 28-day period in closed bottles. Inoculum microorganisms from a sewage treatment plant mainly fed with municipal waste water were used. After the incubation period, PFBE was biodegraded by 15.9 %. On the basis of this result, PFBE is not readily biodegradable. No toxic effects on the microorganisms were observed. The reference substance, sodium benzoate, was degraded by 78.4 %.
