The influence of the test item 3-Mercaptopropionic acid on aquatic organisms representing three different trophic levels was investigated in three acute studies in accordance with OECD guidelines and GLP principles. The acute toxicity determined was as follows: Brachydanio rerio 96 h-LC50 = 98 mg/L, Daphnia magna 48 h-EC50 = 9 mg/L, and Selenastrum capricornutum 72 h-ErC50 = 26 mg/L. In conclusion, the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna was the most sensitive organism tested with a 48 h-EC50 of 9 mg/L. Long-term tests with pelagic as well as with sediment living organisms have not been performed. They are required if the chemical safety assessment indicates the need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms.

Furthermore, inhibitory effects on the respiration of activated sludge were also tested in a OECD guideline study under GLP. The study resulted in a 3 h-EC50 of 393.3 mg/L. The 3 h-EC10 was determined to be 32.1 mg/L.
