Additional information

2 -Hexyldecan-1-ol is a member of the Guerbet Alcohols, which comprises a range of branched long chain alcohols C12-32. It is also structurally related to the substances of the OECD SIDS Long Chain Alcohols (LCA) categories, comprising a range of straight and branched long chain alcohols C6-22. Experimental data for the Guerbet and LCA categories has been evaluated and trends in the environmental fate of long chain alcohols were deduced.

There are three experimental studies available for C12, C16 and C20 Guerbet Alcohols and these indicate for the longer chain alcohols (C16 and C20) low toxicity to algae with effect concentrations of >11.3 and >100 mg/L. 2-Butyloctanol showed toxicity to algae with an ErC50 of 2.1 mg/l. These studies are in agreement with the findings from the OECD SIDS report (described above) where the low solubility limits of the longest chain alcohols are unlikely to exhibit acute (or chronic) toxicity to aquatic organisms. Consequently, no toxicity to algae is expected for Guerbet alcohols with carbon chain lengths >=C16.
