Description of key information

Parent compound propionyl chloride and hydrolysis product propionic acid: Significant accumulation in organisms is not to be expected.
However, the assessment of the bioaccumulation potential of the parent compound may be of low relevance, due to the rapid hydrolysis of the acid chloride in aqueous solutions.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

BCF (aquatic species):
3.2 L/kg ww

Additional information

A study is not required for this tonnage band. Moreover and in accordance with column 2 of Annex IX, the study does not need to be conducted if the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (for instance a log Kow ≤ 3). Propionyl chloride (CAS 79 -03 -8) has an estimated log Kow of 0.02 (KOWWIN v1.68, EPI Suite v4.10; BASF SE, 2011). The substance decomposes rapidly to form HCl and propionic acid (CAS 79 -09 -4). The experimental log Kow of 0.33 (Hansch, C et al., 1995) for the hydrolysis product propionic acid does not indicate a significant potential for bioaccumulation.

Parent compound: Propionyl chloride:

The BCF value was calculated using EPISuite v4.10 SRC BCFBAF v3.01. The obtained BCF value was 3.2 L/kg ww (log BCF = 0.5).

The obtained BCF value indicates that no significant accumulation in organisms is expected.

However, the assessment of the bioaccumulation potential of the parent compound may be of low relevance, due to the rapid hydrolysis of the acid chloride in aqueous solutions.

Hydrolysis product: Propionic acid:

The BCF value was calculated using EPISuite v4.10 SRC BCFBAF v3.01. The obtained BCF value was 3.2 L/kg ww (log BCF = 0.50).

The obtained BCF value indicates that no significant accumulation in organisms is expected.
