Appearance/physical state/colour

The experimental results indicate that 2-nitro-p-toluidine is a orange coloured organic solid, in amorphous form having characteristic odour. The other supporting studies also corroborate the key study results

Melting point/Freezing point

The experimental value of melting point of 2-nitro-p-toluidine was determined to be 111 deg C at 955 hPa atmospheric pressure. No decomposition or sublimation was observed at this temeperature.The melting point at 101 325 Pa was equivalent to 117.770 deg C.

The other supporting studies also corroborate the key study results with the melting point from various authoritative databases rangind between 115 to 117oC.

Boiling point

Using the weight of evidence approach, the predicted boiling point from 2 authoritative calculators is found to range between 288.38 to 302.9oC (at 760 Torr). For the purpose of the chemical safety report the boiling point value of 302.9oC has been considered since 760 Torr is equivalent to 101 325 Pa

Density

The experimental value of density for 2-nitro-p-toluidine by the mass by volume method was determined to be 1.5 g/cm³ at 23 deg C . The relative density at 20 deg C is equivalent to 1.304. The supporting studies also indicate density values that correspond to the key study value. In certain cases, the value differs from the key study due to the difference in the temperature conditions

Particle size distribution (Granulometry)

Based on the principle of measurement of relative amounts of particles present, sorted according to size, sieve analysis method have been used in this case and the particle size distribution (granulometry) of 2-nitro-p-toluidine is found to be in the range of 75 micrometer to 600 micrometer. Majority of the particles were found to be in the size of 500 micrometer (51.06%).

Vapour pressure

Vapour pressure value of 2-nitro-p-toluidine is estimated to be 0.000451 mm Hg at 25°C by modified grain method. This value when converted into Pascal (Pa) works out to be 0.0601283882 Pa at a temperature of 25°C. The supporting study shows a slightly higher vapour pressure value. However, for the purpose of chemical safety assessment, the value of the key study shall be used

Partition coefficient

The experimental value of octanol water partition co-efficient (log Pow) of 2-nitro-p-toluidine is found to be 0.5682 at 23 deg C temperature and pH 2.98 by shake flask method. This value indicates that 2-nitro-p-toluidine is relatively hydrophillic in nature.

Water solubility

The experimental value of the water solubility of 2-nitro-p-toluidine was found to be 2100 mg/L at 23 deg C temperature. This value indicates that 2-nitro-p-toluidine is soluble in water.

Solubility in organic solvents / fat solubility

Experimental value of solubility of 2-nitro-p-toluidine in methanol is 4600 mg/L and in petroleum ether is 2400 mg/L at 23 deg C temperature.The solubility in methanol at 20 deg C is equivalent to 434.78 mg/L.

Surface Tension

Surface tension of 2-nitro-p-toluidine is estimated to be 54.93 mN/m.

Flash point

The experimental value of flash point by the Open cup method of 2-nitro-p-toluidine was determined to be 114 deg C at 955 hPa. This value of Flash point at 101 325 Pa is equivalent to 120.95 deg C.

The supporting study shows value different from the key study which could be due to the difference in the estimation conditions. However for the purpose of the dossier and chemical safety assessment, the experimental key study value shall be used

Auto Flammability

2-nitro-p-toluidine did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 23ºC and atmospheric pressure of 955 hPa. This indicates that 2-nitro-p-toluidine is not auto-flammable

Flammability

2-nitro-p-toluidine ignites only when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 2-nitro-p-toluidine is flammable only at high temperature of about 950°C and is hence non-flammable under normal temperature and pressure conditions.

Explosiveness

According to theoretical considerations based on chemical structure, 2-nitro-p-toluidine does not possess explosive or oxidizing properties. The reason being there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties in 2-nitro-p-toluidine. Thus, as per column 2 of Annex VII this end point wasconsidered for waiver.

Oxidising properties

The experimental value of the end point of redox titration for 2-nitro-p-toluidine was found to be 585 mg/100g of sample suggesting that the chemical is mildly oxidising.

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products

2-nitro-p-toluidine was found to be stable in organic solvent.

Dissociation constant

The average experimental pKa value for 2-nitro-p-toluidine was found to be 0.210E-12 at 23 deg C temperature which is much less than the value of pKa that has been reported for the chemical safety assessment.

Viscosity

This end point was considered for waiver as viscosity is an inherent property of liquid substances and 2-nitro-p-toluidine is an organic solid. Therefore testing for this end point was considered scientifically unjustified and considered for waiver
