Description of key information

Appearance / physical state / colour:

The physical appearance of Piroctone olamine is observed as white to yellowish colored organic compound with solid crystalline powder in nature.

Melting point/ Freezing point:

The melting point of Piroctone olamine is determined to be in the range of 133 - 136 °C.

Boiling point:

The boiling point of Piroctone olamine was determined to be in the range of 130 - 135 °C.

Density:

The density of  Piroctone olamine is determined to be 1.1 g/cm3.

Particle size distribution (Granulometry):

The particle size distribution of Piroctone olamine was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determined to be in the range of 147 micron to 52 micron.

Vapour pressure:

The vapour pressure of the test substance Piroctone olamine is determined to be 0.00017 Pa, 0.00048 Pa, and 0.0005 Pa at  20°C, 25°C and 50°C respectively.

Partition coefficient:

The estimated log Pow of target chemical is 1.05 dimensionless by this value this chemical is considered as hydrophilic in nature.

Water solubility:

The estimated water solubility of test substance Piroctone olamine at 25 deg C was 5.00E+05 mg/l.

Surface tension:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study need only be conducted if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. The Piroctone olamine is used in cosmetics like in shampoos, tonics, as antifungal agents etc. For this use, surface activity is not an important property. Hence this study was considered for waiver.

Flash point:

The flash point of Piroctone olamine is determined to be 161.9°C.

Autoflammability:

Piroctone olamine did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that Piroctone olamine is not auto-flammable.

Flammability:

Piroctone olamine does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Piroctone olamine is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus Piroctone olamine was considered non-flammable.

Explosiveness:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties.

Oxidising properties:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with oxidizing properties and hence the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

pH:

The pH of 1% aqueous suspension of Piroctone olamine is determined at 20°C in the range of 8.5 - 10.

Dissociation constant (pKa):

The dissociation constant (pKa) of  Piroctone olamine is determined as 7.4.

Viscosity:

In accordance with Section 2 of REACH Annex XI, information requirement section 7.17, this study cannot be conducted on solid materials or gases. According to ECHA Chapter 7 guidance, viscosity measurement is only relevant to liquids. Piroctone olamine is a solid substance, hence this study can be considered for waiver.
