Description of key information

No data on skin and eye irritating properties of sodium dibutyldithiocarbamate (SDBC) are available. However, according to Column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the studies do not need to be conducted as the substance is self-classified as corrosive based on the results of the available acute dermal toxicity study.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (corrosive)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Additional information

No studies on skin and eye irritation with sodium dibutyldithiocarbamate (SDBC) are available for assessment. However, in the available GLP-compliant guideline acute dermal toxicity study signs of corrosive effects were observed in 10 out of 10 animals at dose level of 2000 mg/kg bw of 46.2% aqueous solution of the substance (corresponding to 940 mg/kg bw for pure substance) and in 3 out of 3 animals at dose level of 1000 mg/kg bw of 46.2% aqueous solution of the substance (corresponding to 470 mg/bw pure substance). Using a precautionary principle and in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII, classification of the substance as corrosive is suggested and no additional studies need to be performed.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, pure SDBC, as well as its 46.2% (w/w) aqueous solution should be classified as corrosive to the skin and eye Category 1C, H314 (causes severe skin burns and eye damage).
