Conclusion on classification

Based on Directive 67/548/EEC, results of validated structure activity relationships and expert judgment may also be taken into account where appropriate with regard to classification and labelling of substances.

Based on all available data for daphnids, fish and algae, sodium dibutyldithiocarbamate should be classified as R50 (very toxic to aquatic organisms) according to Directive 67/548/EEC. The lowest L(E)C50 value (48-h EC50 of 0.91 mg/L in Daphnia magna) is lower than 1 mg/L. As it is expected that sodium dibutyldithiocarbamate is readily biodegradable as it is for its structural analogue sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate and the calculated log Kow is 3.63 further classification with R53 is not necessary.        

According to the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 sodium dibutyldithiocarbamate needs to be labelled for the same reasons as stated above with H400 (Acute toxicity Cat. 1; very toxic to aquatic life).
