Description of key information

The substance Paraffins (petroleum), normal C>10 is expected to be with very limited toxicity as the EL50 (72h) was not reached (noted to be higher than 10000 mg/L) in the case of the tested substance Hydrocarbons C11-C14, n-alkanes, <2% aromatics.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

One study report is available for this endpoint, dealing with the toxicity of the substance Hydrocarbons, C11 -C14, n-alkanes, <2% aromatics, on algae growth rate. This study used the marine species Skeletonema costatum.

The results showed that the exposure of Skeletonema costatum to concentrations up to 10,000 mg/l for 72 h does not inhibit algal growth (based on growth rate measurements). Therefore, the substance Paraffins (petroleum), normal C>10, is not expected to inhibit algal growth.
