Description of key information

Normal paraffins in the substance "Paraffins (petroleum), normal C>10", are considered to be readily biodegradable, exhibiting 77 to 83% biodegradation in 28 days based on oxygen consumption and meeting the 10-day window.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

Normal paraffins in the C9 to C14 Aliphatics category (<2% aromatics) are readily biodegradable, exhibiting 77 to 83% biodegradation in 28 days based on oxygen consumption and meeting the 10-day window.

Moreover, "Hydrocarbons, C14-C20, aliphatics (≤2% aromatics)" were found to be readily biodegradable (biodegradation > 60% ThOD) in an OECD 306 ready biodegradability test.

Therefore, the substance Paraffins (petroleum), normal C>10 is considered readily biodegradable and no further biodegradation studies are deemed necessary.
