Applicant's summary and conclusion

Executive summary:

This review summarized the results of epidemiologic studies that assessed the adverse reproductive and developmental effects of anesthetic exposure on the pregnant surgical patient and the occupationally exposed female and male health care worker.

There is evidence in some of the studies of an increased rate of spontaneous abortion and fetal and perinatal mortality. These associations appear to be dependent on a number of factors that are not uniformly related to anesthesia alone.

But the epidemiologic evidence is too weak to conclude that there is a causal association between anesthetic exposure and adverse reproductive and developmental outcomes.

As this review deals only with anesthetic in a general manner, this publication was not consider in the toxicity assessment.
