Reliable data are available for the acute toxicity of read-across substance, bismuth subnitrate on freshwater fish, invertebrates and algae.Bismuth subnitrate has a higher water solubility than the other bismuth substances therefore, it was used for the aquatic toxicity studies as it is considered to be the most bioavailable. Because of its limited solubility, the aquatic organisms were exposed to the water-accommodated fraction of bismuth subnitrate after seven days stirring. No toxic effects were observed up to the highest concentration tested, 137 mg/L bismuth subnitrate (equivalent to 100 mg bismuth/L).
