Reference item barium nitrate / cellulose mixtures containing 10 to 90% weight of oxidizer (reference item) in 10% increments were prepared.  

The pile was formed by means of a mould. After dropping the mould once from a height of 2 cm onto a solid surface, the remaining excess mixture was scraped off with an obliquely positioned sheet. A non-combustible, non-porous and low heat-conducting plate was then placed on the top of the mould. The apparatus was inverted and the mould was removed.

A hot flame of a gas burner heated to approximately 1000 °C was used as ignition source. The air-speed was sufficient to prevent fumes escaping into the laboratory and did not vary during the test. One end of the pile was ignited by touching with the flame.

The time of reaction over a 200 mm distance after the reaction zone had propagated an initial distance of 30 mm was measured.

After the test was performed with the reference item, the test was then carried out at least once with each mixture of the test item with cellulose.

If the maximum burning rate of the test item / cellulose mixtures was found to be significantly greater than for the reference item / cellulose mixtures, the test could be stopped. Otherwise the test should be continued with the following series, to determine the fastest burning rate.

The test was performed six times for the three mixtures having produced the highest burning rate, both for reference item / cellulose mixtures and for test item / cellulose mixtures.

3-Bromo-1-(3-chloro-2-pyridinyl)-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxylic acid was not considered to have oxidising properties under the experimental conditions used.
