The three acute tests on the three trophic levels are available. Fish and daphnia toxicity doesn't reveal any toxicity, the results for algae are to be discussed. Furthermore a test has been performed on Lemna minor (see specific end point discussion) demonstrating that no toxicity has to be considered up to the highest tested level (1000 mg/l).
The following considerations are applicable for most dyes: current algal test protocols do not distinguish between chemical toxicity and growth inhibition due to physical shading when coloured substances like dyes are evaluated. A modified test has been finalised, where the coloured substance is put on the top of the algae vessel, but without contact and it has been demonstrated that the grow inhibition is the same. Even if this test has not been performed with this specific substance, the wide experience with many dyes has revealed that the algae toxicity is usually comparable with fish and daphnia toxicity, therefore no classification for the environment has been proposed.
