Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From 08 FEBRUARY 2019 to 08 FEBRUARY 2019
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Burning time:
ca. 2 min
Moisture (wt %):
0.01
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

A stop watch was held ready. The test item was heated with the flame of a gas burner for
two minutes.
Since ignition did not occur within two minutes, the test item was classified as not highly
flammable (for EU regulations) and as non-flammable solid (for UN regulations), therefore
no determination of burning rate was necessary.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
No ignition was observed throughout the course of the test.
The test item 1-butyl-5-[(4-chlorophenyl)azo]-1,2-dihydro-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-
oxonicotinonitrile should be considered as not highly flammable (for EU regulations) and as
non-flammable solid (for UN regulations).
No observations were made which might cause doubts concerning the validity of the study
outcome

Description of key information

First, a safety test was performed. A small amount of the test item was heated on a magnesia groove with a gas burner in order to derive safety precautions. The test item started to melt to an orange, then red liquid.
In the preliminary screening test following the EU and UN method, the test item was heated with the flame of a teclu burner. Melting to a dark red liquid was observed. Afterwards it evaporated and left a black-blue residue.
Therefore, the test item 1-butyl-5-[(4-chlorophenyl)azo]-1,2-dihydro-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-oxonicotinonitrile should be considered as

not highly flammable (for EU regulations)

non-flammable solid (for UN regulations)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified
