Details on results:
Phenol, ethoxylated gave a mean result for solubility of 29921.209 mg/l with no evidence of chemical instability, due to the standards that were injected every run. The protocol states that the percentage difference between replicates must be ≤15% and samples were within this range, showing a percentage of using the formula : [ (Average Concentration 2 – Average Concentration 3)/ Average Conc. 2-3 ] * 100 .

The Water bath in the 3 days showed a temperature of 29.5±0.5°C and the laboratory where the samples were equilibrated a temperature of 20.8±0.2°C.

Executive summary:

The water solubility of Phenol, ethoxylated was determined by the flask method, using a procedure designed to be compatible with Method A.6 Water Solubility of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008 and Method 105 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 27 July 1995. A preliminary test was performed in order to select the appropriate method and to determine that volume of water in which complete dissolution of the sample occurs. In a stepwise procedure, increasing volumes of water were added at room temperature to 0.1 g of the liquid sample in a 10 mL glass-stoppered measuring cylinder. After each addition of water, the mixture was shaken for 10 minutes and checked for any undissolved parts of the sample, visual observations were made. After the addition of 0.1 mL of water, the sample was immiscible and it showed no solubility until 10 mL were added. Therefore, 10m mL was the lowest volume of water that could have been added to dissolve the sample in water clearly. Based on the result of the preliminary test, the solubility of the material was estimated to be approximately between 10 g/L (10,000 mg/L) and 50 g/L (50,000 mg/L), therefore the shake flask method was chosen for the definitive test. Three identical 100 mL volumetric flasks were prepared by addition of the test sample (5.01 g, 5.00 g, 5.00 g) and by adding 100 mL of water, the contents were agitated. These flasks were tightly stoppered and incubated in a water bath (29.7°C) whilst being constantly stirred. After 24 hours the first sample was removed from the water bath and left equilibrating at 20.6°C. Then the test was centrifuged and pipetted into a vial ready for the analysis. After 48 hours the second sample was removed and followed the same procedure (20.8°C); likewise, for the 72 hours flask (20.9°C). The samples were run to determine the dissolved concentration of Phenol, ethoxylated in the eluent of the solubility test solutions on an HPLC.
