Fire-fighting measures

- Extinguishing media
Suitable extinguishing media:
Use water spray, alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide.
Unsuitable extinguishing media:
Strong water jet.

- Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture
Vapour may travel considerable distance to source of ignition and flash back. Container explosion may occur under fire conditions. Forms explosive mixtures in air. Contact with other material may cause fire.

- Advice for fire fighters
Wear self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighting if necessary.

Accidental release measures

- Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
Keep unprotected people away, allow only well trained experts wearing suitable protective clothing to abide in the field of accident.
Evacuate area. Shut off all sources of ignition. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus, rubber boots and heavy rubber gloves.

- Environmental precautions
Dispose of spillage and waste (product/packaging) in accordance with all applicable environmental laws. Do not allow to enter sewers/soil/surface or ground water. Notify the respective authorities in accordance with local law in the case of environmental pollution immediately.

- Methods and material for containment and cleaning up
Contain spillage, and then collect with an electrically protected vacuum cleaner or by wetbrushing and place in container for disposal according to local regulations.

Handling and storage

Attention - The product is not yet completely tested
The data is not sufficient for an industrial toxicological evaluation.
This substance should be handled under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH regulation Article 17(3) for on-site isolated intermediates and Article 18(4) for transported isolated intermediates in that it is rigorously contained during its whole lifecycle. Site documentation to support safe handling arrangements including the selection of engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls in accordance with risk-based management systems should be available at each manufacturing site and is also confirmed for the transport as well as for the use of the substance.

- Precautions for safe handling
Observe conventional hygiene precautions. Wear appropriate respirator, chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, other protective clothing. Use only in a chemical fume hood. Safety shower and eye bath should be available. Do not breathe vapor. Do not get into eyes, on skin or on clothing. Avoid prolonged or repeated exposure. Wash thoroughly after handling.

Technical measures: ensure adequate ventilation.
Precautions against fire and explosion: use non-sparking tools.

- Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
Keep in original, closed and labelled container. The place of storage has to be properly ventilated and clean. Store in cool and dry place. Keep away from combustible material, heat, sparks and open flame. Follow all instructions on the label.
Storage temperature: 2 – 8 °C
Air and moisture sensitive. Light sensitive.

Exposure controls / personal protection

This substance is handled under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with the ECHA REACH Guidance on Intermediates (Feb 08) and the Cefic/CONCAWE guidance for industry on SCC (February 09). Site documentation to confirm safe handling arrangements in accordance with risk-based management systems is available at the manufacturing/import site.

Exposure controls
In case of a hazardous material with no controlled concentration limit it is the employer’s duty to keep concentration levels down to a minimum achievable by existing scientific and technological means, where the hazardous substance poses no harm to workers.

Appropriate engineering controls
In pursuance of work is proper foresight needed to avoid spilling onto clothes and floors and to avoid contact with eyes and skin. Facilities storing or utilising this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low. Avoid inhaling vapour; avoid contact with eyes or skin. After working wash thoroughly hands and face. Remove contaminated clothes. Keep away
from beverages, foodstuff and feed.

Personal protective equipment
Eye/face protection: Safety glasses with side-shields conforming to EN166 Use equipment for eye protection tested and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US) or EN 166(EU).
Skin protection: Splash contact, Material: Nature latex/chloroprene, Minimum layer thickness: 0,6 mm, Break through time: 10 min, Material tested: Lapren® (KCL 706), test method: EN374
If used in solution, or mixed with other substances, and under conditions which differ from EN 374 contact the supplier of the CE approved gloves. This recommendation is advisory only and must be evaluated by an industrial hygienist and safety officer familiar with the specific situation of anticipated use by our customers. It should not be construed as offering an approval for any specific use scenario.
Body Protection: The type of protective equipment must be selected according to the concentration and amount of the dangerous substance at the specific workplace.
Respiratory protection: Where risk assessment shows air-purifying respirators are appropriate use a full-face respirator with multi-purpose combination (US) or type ABEK (EN 14387) respirator cartridges as a backup to engineering controls. If the respirator is the sole means of protection, use a full-face
supplied air respirator. Use respirators and components tested and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US) or CEN (EU).
Environmental exposure controls: Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Do not let product enter drains.

- Additional information
The requirements detailed herein assume skilled work under normal conditions and usage of the product for appropriate aims. If conditions differ from normal or work is carried out under extreme conditions an expert’s advice should be sought out before deciding upon further protective measures.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity: None known
Chemical stability: Unstable and decomposition on exposure to air, light or water.
Possibility of hazardous reactions: Amyl nitrite vapours form an explosive mixture in air or oxygen at room temperature and may explode if ignited.
Conditions to avoid: Avoid excess heat, exposure to light or air.
Incompatible materials: Oxidizing agents, acids, alcohols, strong bases.
Hazardous decomposition products: NOX, CO, irritating and toxic fumes and gas, CO2.

Disposal considerations

Product
Burn in a chemical incinerator equipped with an afterburner and scrubber but exert extra care in igniting as this material is highly flammable. Offer surplus and non-recyclable solutions to a licensed disposal company.

Contaminated packaging
Dispose of as unused product.
