In the investigation of self-ignition in the Grewer Oven for the test item an exothermic process was detected starting at a temperature of approx. 190 °C that led to a maximum temperature of approx. 405 °C (corresponding oven temperature 290 °C). No further thermal effects could be observed up to the maximum test temperature of approx. 410 °C. After the measurement a grey to black residue remained in the wire basket.

For the test item in mixture with Kieselguhr an exothermic process was detected starting at a temperature of approx. 190 °C that led to a maximum temperature of approx. 520 °C (corresponding oven temperature 265 °C). A further exothermic process was detected starting at a temperature of approx. 320 °C that led to a maximum temperature of approx. 430 °C (corresponding oven temperature 410 °C).

Executive summary:

The self-ignition behavior of the test item was determined by Grewer test method in the oven according to VDI 2263, sheet 1. The test item was filled in a small wire basket of a volume of 8 cm³ and this wire-basket was placed into the oven. In this oven, the self-ignition behavior of five samples can be determined simultaneously. An additional basket was filled with a reference material (graphite).

The temperature of the oven was increased with a constant heating rate (1.2 K/min) in an air stream and the temperature of the sample was recorded as a function of time at intervals of 10 seconds. The self-ignition behavior of the pure test item was indicated as a deviation between sample temperature and reference temperature.

In addition, the self-ignition behavior of the sample blended with 50 wt.-% Kieselguhr was investigated in a third wire basket simultaneously.

The test item indicated a self-heating at atmospheric pressure starting at a temperature of 190 °C; this self-heating process led to a maximum temperature of approx. 405 °C (corresponding oven temperature 290 °C).

On the basis of the results of the tests on the self-ignition in the Grewer Oven a classification of the test item as self-heating substance cannot be excluded.
