Endpoint:
explosive properties of explosives
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
weight of evidence
Study period:
23 Sep 2016 to 14 Feb 2017
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: UN Test 2(b): “Koenen Test”
GLP compliance:
yes
Parameter:
thermal sensitivity - Koenen test: diameter of the orifice plate
Remarks on result:
negative (not further specified)
Parameter:
thermal sensitivity - Koenen test: limiting diameter (mm)
Remarks on result:
negative (not further specified)

RESULTS

- Sample preparation: Tested as received.

- During each test, after a time t1 and lasting for a time t2, test material is vented with a flame through the orifice.

Note: In the absence of a positive result using the 1 mm orifice, no further tests at larger orifice diameters were required.

O = tube recovered unchanged

t1 = Time elapsed from ignition of burners to the first noticeable reaction of the test substance

t2 = Time elapsed from t1 to the end of the reaction.

CONCLUSIONS

- No explosions were observed using the 1 mm orifice plates, i.e. Limiting Diameter < 1 mm.

- In accordance with the criteria of UN Test 2(b), the Limiting Diameter is less than 2 mm and the outcome of the test is considered to be “–” (i.e. negative).

- The test substance shows no violent effect on heating under confinement.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The test substance shows no violent effect on heating under confinement.
Executive summary:

To determine the sensitivity of the test substance to the effect of intense heat under high confinement a study was performed according to UN Test 2(b) and in compliance with GLP. In this study no explosions were observed using 1 mm orifice plates, i.e. Limiting Diameter < 1 mm and the outcome of the test is considered to be “–” (i.e. negative).

Parameter:
other: Explosiveness
Remarks on result:

Remarks:
no ability propagate a deflagration with explosive violence

RESULTS

The results of three tests carried out on the test substance are tabulated below:

Test Number

Rise Time (ms)

Maximum Pressure (kPa)

1

816.8

6052

2

596.4

5099

3

967.5

6895

In all cases the upper pressure threshold (2070 kPa) was achieved and the minimum rise time obtained was 596.4 ms.

CONCLUSIONS

- The minimum time for the pressure to rise from 690 kPa to 2070 kPa = 596.4 ms.

- In accordance with the criteria of UN Test 2(c)(i), the minimum rise time is > 30 ms and so the outcome of the test is considered to be “–” (i.e. negative).

- The test substance shows only slow deflagration when ignited under confinement.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The test substance shows only slow deflagration when ignited under confinement.
Executive summary:

To determine the effects of ignition under confinement, in order to establish the ability of the test substance to propagate a deflagration with explosive violence, a test was carried out in accordance with UN Test 2(c)(i) and in compliance with GLP. In this study the test substance showed only slow deflagration when ignited under confinement.
