Description of key information
Acute toxicity
Short-term toxicity to fish
Key study: OECD 203, GLP, semi-static, Danio rerio, LC50 (96h) > 100 mg/L
Read-Across: WoE, FF6, OECD 203, GLP, static, Danio rerio, LC50 (96h) >7400 mg/L
Read-Across: WoE, Zn ion, Cottus bairdi, 96 h, LC50 = 2.66 mg/L(converted to the target substance taking into account the Zn content of 16.5 %)
Short-term toxicity to aquatic Invertebrates
Read-Across: WoE, FF6, OECD 202, GLP, D. magna, 48 h, EC50 = 4400 mg/L
Read-Across: WoE, Blancolen, OECD 202, GLP, D. magna, 48 h, EC50 = > 100 mg/L, NOEC = 100 mg/L
Read-Across: WoE, Zn ion, D. magna, 48 h, EC50 = 0.79 mg/L (converted to the target substance taking into account the Zn content of 16.5 %)
Read-Across: WoE, Zn ion, D. magna, 48 h, EC50 = 2.15 mg/L (converted to the target substance taking into account the Zn content of 16.5 %)
Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria
Read-Across: WoE, FF6,D. subspicatus, OECD 201, GLP, 72 h, ErC50 = 315 mg/l
Read-Across: WoE, Zn, P. subcapitata, 72 h, ErC50 = 0.64 mg/L - 12.42 mg/L (values converted to the target substance considering the Zn content of 16.5 %)
Read-Across: WoE, Zn, Chlorella sp., 72 h, ErC50 = 0.55 mg/L, ErC10 = 0.17 mg/L, LOEC = 0.27 mg/L, NOEC = 0.12 mg/L (values converted to the target substance considering the Zn content of 16.5 %)
Conclusion
Since the zinc concentration in the registered substance is below 25 %, no classification for acute toxicity is required for the target substance in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Chronic toxicity
Long-term toxicity to fish
Read-Across: WoE, Zn ion,O. mykiss, 30 d LC50: 2.04 to 11.94 mg/L; NOEC (30 d): 1.26 to 4.67 mg/L(converted to the target substance taking into account the Zn content of 16.5 %)
Read-Across: WoE, Zn ion,O. mykiss, MATC obtained in hard water of 1.94 - 3.88 mg/L and a MATC obtained in soft water of 0.85 - 1.58 mg/L(converted to the target substance taking into account the Zn content of 16.5 %)
Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates
Read-Across: WoE, Zn ion,D. magna, 21 d, EC50: 0.68 to 3.25 mg/L, NOEC: 0.38 - 2.98 mg/L (converted to the target substance taking into account the Zn content of 16.5 % at the most)
Read-Across: WoE, Zn ion,C. dubia, 9 d, EC 50: 2.15 - 2.96 mg/L (converted to the target substance taking into account the Zn content of 16.5 % at the most)
Conclusion
As in the case of long-term/chronic toxicity, algae appear to be the most sensitive species with NOEC of 0.12 mg/L for Chlorella sp. (Johnson 2007). The maximum concentration of zinc ion in the registered substance is 16.5 %. Since the zinc concentration this is below 25 %, classification for chronic toxicity category 2 is triggered for the registered substance in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Toxicity to microorganisms
Read-across : WoE, FF6, OECD 209, GLP, activated sludge, EC50 (3h) > 2000 mg/L, NOEC (3h) < 125 mg/L
Read-Across: WoE, Zn ion, ISO 9509, activated sludge, 3 h, IC50 = 13.39 mg/L (converted to the target substance taking into account the Zn content of 16.5 %), NOEC = 3.82 mg/L (converted to the target substance taking into account the Zn content of 16.5 %)
