Test guideline
Qualifier:
no guideline available
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The European Geochemical Mapping of Agricultural and Grazing Land Soil (GEMAS) project measured ambient metal concentrations in agricultural and grazing land soils and analysed samples from 33 out of 38 European countries to develop a suitable harmonised geochemical database for soils. Measured concentrations were statistically analysed for EU countries plus Norway.

Study design

Details on sampling:
Sampling:
The GEMAS project area of 5,600,000 km2 was divided into a grid with 50 km x 50 km cells. Samples for agricultural and grazing land soil were collected across Europe to develop a suitable harmonised geochemical database for soils. Within each 2500 km² cell, the collection site was freely selectable to collect the 'most representative' sample.

Agricultural land soil samples:
The minimum size of the plot was set to 25x50m for a regularly ploughed agricultural field (arable land). The ploughing soil layer (Ap-horizon) of agricultural land was collected at a depth of 0 - 20 cm.

Grazing land soil samples:
A sizeable plot of grazing land, which is not regualary ploughed. If no grazing land was available within the cell, any plot with undisturbed permanent grass cover was sampled. The topmost part soil on grazing land was collected at a depth of 0 – 10 cm.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
In agricultural soil, ambient concentrations of Sr range from <1 to 3777 mg/kg Sr with 50th and 90th percentiles of 18 and 104 mg/kg Sr, respectively.
Ambient strontium levels (measured in AR extracts) of grazing land soils range from <1 to 4,247 mg/kg Sr with 50th and 90th percentiles of 18 and 105 mg/kg Sr, respectively.
