Description of key information

In the assessment of strontium 2-ethylhexanoate toxicity to microorganisms, read-across to the assessment entities soluble strontium substances and 2-ethylhexanoic acid is applied since the ions of strontium 2-ethylhexanoate determine its toxicity in the environment. Strontium toxicity to microorganisms was estimated with > 163.8 mg (EC10) strontium per litre for the 3 -h respiration inhibition of activated sludge, the highest concentration tested. Therefore, strontium appears to have a low potential of toxicity to microorganisms. Regarding 2-ethylhexanoate, EC10 (71.7 mg/L) and EC50 (112.1 mg/L) values were derived after 17 hours of exposure using Pseudomonas putida. Thus, strontium 2-ethylhexanoate appears to have some potential for toxicity to aquatic microorganisms.
