Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Description of key information

Metal carboxylates such as strontium 2-ethylhexanoate are substances consisting of a metal cation and a carboxylic acid anion which, upon dissolution, determine the aquatic toxicity. The toxicity of strontium ions to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria was determined by Wenzel (2015) according to OECD 201, yielding a NOErC, ErC10 and ErC50 of 18.8, 24.3 and > 47 mg / L strontium for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, respectively. Supporting toxicity studies further report NOEC values well above 100 mg strontium/L. Thus, strontium has a low potential for toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria. Regarding the 2-ethylhexanoic acid anion, studies on the alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata revealed an EC50 and EC10 (72h) of 500 and 130 mg/L, respectively. Thus, strontium 2-ethylhexanoate appears to have some potential for toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria.
