According to the REACH requirements,

"In the absence of toxicity data for soil organisms, the equilibrium partitioning method may be applied to assess the hazard to soil organisms. The choice of the appropriate tests depends on the outcome of the chemical safety assessment. In particular for substances that have a high potential to adsorb to soil or that are very persistent, the registrant shall consider long-term toxicity testing instead of short-term. These studies do not need to be conducted if direct and indirect exposure of the soil compartment is unlikely. " (Annex IX & X)

Carboxylic acids, C5 -9 have no potential for adsorption to soils, no significant potential for bioaccumulation and is readily biodegradable. The results of aquatic studies clearly demonstrate that the target substance is not acutely toxic. A QSAR result also indicates that no toxic effect on soil macroorganisms is to be expected (ECOSAR). Therefore, the equilibrium partitioning method is used to assess the hazard potential to soil organisms.

The results of the chemical safety assessment indicates no need to investigate further the effects of the substance and/or relevant degradation products on sediment organisms.
