Guideline:
OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
Version / remarks:
27 July 1995
Deviations:
no
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
Version / remarks:
May 2008
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
other: Du Noüy ring method
Surface tension:
71.6 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
1 g/L

The test item solution was held at constant temperature (20.0 ± 0.5 °C) in a temperature-controlled room. The surface tension of sample aqueous solution (ca. 1 g/L) was determined six times resulting in 71.8 (144 sec*), 71.6 (145 sec*), 71.7 (141 sec*), 71.8 (144 sec*), 71.3 (143 sec*) and 71.4 (141 sec*) mN/m. The respective mean value is 71.6 ± 0.22 mN/m at 20 °C using the ring method.

As this value is higher than 60 mN/m, the test item is classified as not surface active.

* Time expired since the test item solution was transferred into the test vessel

Conclusions:
The surface tension of a sample aqueous solution (ca. 1 g/L) was found 71.6 ± 0.22 mN/m (95 % confidence interval) at 20 °C using the ring method.
Executive summary:

In the course of this study (GLP-based, according to OECD guideline 115 and EU Method A.5) aqueous solutions were prepared containing 1 g/L of the test sample. Surface tension of this solution was determined applying the ring method. The test was performed with the help of Krüss Easy Dyne type tensiometer.

The surface tension of a sample aqueous solution (ca. 1 g/L) was found 71.6 ± 0.22 mN/m (95 % confidence interval) at 20 °C using the ring method. This value represents the mean of six independent measurements resulting in values of 71.8, 71.6, 71.7, 71.8, 71.3 and 71.4 mN/m.

As this value is higher than 60 mN/m, the test item is classified as not surface active.
