Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity studies of naphthenic acids, nickel saltsare not available. Thus, read-across to the assessment entities soluble nickel substances and naphthenic acid is applied since the ions of naphthenic acids, nickel saltsdetermine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Reliable studies indicate that the moiety of ecotoxicological concern are nickel cations. For nickel LC50 values of freshwater species range from 0.4 mg Ni/L (Pimephales promelas; Hoanget al., 2004) to 320 mg Ni/L (Brachydaniorerio; Janssen Pharmaceutica, 1993d) and from 24.8 mg Ni/L (Fundulus heteroclitus; Bielmyeret al., 2013) to 350 mg Ni/L (Fundulus heteroclitus) for marine organisms. Data for naphthenic acid point to a moderate toxic potential to freshwater fish (Pimephales promelas) with a 96-h LC50 of 5.62 mg/l (measured arithmetic mean).
