The surface tension of an aqueous solution of sample was determined as 62.50 ± 0.29 mN/m at 19.9 °C. - Executive summary:
The surface tension of an aqueous solution of sample (1 g/L) was determined as 62.50 ± 0.29 mN/m at 19.9 °C according to OECD 115 resp. EU A.5 under GLP conditions. One additional measurement was performed for verification (after 60 minutes). No significant changes and thus no significant effects on the time in solution was observed. The minimal deviations seen between the individual measurements and between the two sets of measurement were all well within the validity criteria.
As these values were higher than 60 mN/m, Hydroxyacetone is classified as not surface active.
The surface tension of the negative control (water) revealing a surface tension of 72.64 mN/m at 20.6 °C lay within the accepted range, confirming the validity and reliability of the test.

Findings in the reference test found for water (HPLC grade) a mean surface tension of 10 measurements of 72.64 mN/m at 20.6 °C.
MAIN TEST
The test item solution was held at constant temperature (20.0 ± 0.1 °C). 60 minutes after conclusion of the first measurement series, a second measurement series was performed for verification purposes.
After the first and the second measurement series, the difference between mean values was less than 5% (0.27%). Therefore no additional measurement series was required.
RESULT TEST ITEM
During the specified period of time, no significant changes in the surface tension were detected. Values ranging from 62.08 mN/m to 63.23 mN/m were recorded showing no significant variations. The values of the single determinations show no significant difference (less than 5 % (0.27%) between mean values of the two measurement series)
As the determined surface tension of Hydroxyacetone was higher than 60 mN/m, the test item can be classified as not surface active.
VALIDITY
The calculated value for the surface tension of H2O at 20.6 °C is: 72.65 mN/m
The surface tension of the negative control was determined with 72.64 mN/m at 20.6 °C, therefore showing a difference of 0.01 % from the calculated value. The difference lies within the accepted range of 1% deviation from the calculated value.
