Calculations

Setting in the Brookfield digital viscometer the cylindrical spindle number and the speed (rpm), the instrument software directly calculates the dynamic viscosity (cP) and shows it in the display of the viscometer.

The Dynamic viscosity (cP) value is calculated by the following formula set in the instrument software:

                                   Dynamic viscosity (cP) = F x u

 where:

u         =         Reading value of dynamic viscosity (cP).

F         =         Factor of the specific spindle (pure number).

Kinematic viscosity can be calculated only for Newtonian liquids using the following formula:

                       (u) Kinematic viscosity (cSt) = Dynamic viscosity (cP) / d

 where:

d         =         Density of the sample (g/mL).

Using the basic equation that correlates kinematic viscosity and temperature (ASTM method D341): log[log(u+ 0.7)] = A - B log T

the Kinematic viscosity has been extrapolated at 20°Cfirstly rearranging the above equation, to obtain A and B:

A = log[log(u2 + 0.7)] + B log(T2)

B = {log[log(u2 + 0.7)] – log[log(u1+0.7)]} / (logT1-logT2)

then obtaining the value at 20°C as follows:

u= 10^{10^[A-B*Log(T)]}-0.7

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The test item is a Newtonian liquid and its dynamic viscosity does not change with the shear rate. The dynamic viscosity at 20°C is 3.59 x 10E8 cSt (extrapolated value); the kinematic viscosity at 20°C is 2.67 x 10E8 cP (extrapolated value).
