Description of key information

Potassium-(S)-lactate as such is a solid organic salt but due to its strong hygroscopic properties, it is only available and marketed as clear aqueous solution (60–78 % w/w). Therefore, the melting and boiling point of “pure” Potassium-(S)-lactate are calculated using QSAR and are 174.0 °C and 436.7 °C, respectively. The ionic compound has a water solubility of 1126 g/L at 25 °C which is derived from read across from its racemic counterpart, Potassium-(DL)-lactate (chirality has no or only minor influence on this physical-chemical property). The corresponding partition coefficient octanol-water, estimated by QSAR, is –4.77 and mirrors the high water solubility. As pure Potassium-(S)-lactate is not available, the relative density of the substance can only be indicated for highly concentrated (60–78 % w/w) aqueous solutions. The values range from 1.33 for a 60 % w/w solution to 1.44 for a 78 % w/w solution and are also derived from read across from the respective aqueous Potassium-(DL)-lactate solutions (chirality has no influence on this physical-chemical property). The QSAR estimate for vapour pressure indicates a negligible value of 6.0E-8 Pa for the pure substance. A calculation of the pKa value was not possible as no half-equivalence point could be determined with the titration method according to guideline OECD 112.
