Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity studies with fatty acids, C9-C13-neo, barium salts are not available. Read-across to the assessment entities soluble barium substances and neodecanoic acid (structural analogue of fatty acids, C9 -13 -neo) is applied. Reliable data available for soluble barium substances indicate a low (if any) toxic potential of barium cations since the 3-h NOEC for respiration inhibition of barium chloride is ≥ 1000 mg/L (test limit of OECD TG 209). Data for neodecanoic acid point to a low toxic potential to aquatic microorganisms since an effect up to and at the highest test concentration was not observed resulting in a NOEC ≥ 200 mg/L. In sum, fatty acids, C9-C13-neo, barium salts is expected to have a low (if any) potential for toxicity to aquatic microorganisms.
