Preliminary test:

To 1.64 g of n-octanol, the following aliquots of test item were added:

Experiment

Weighed sample [g]

Result

A

0.01

clear liquid

B

0.05

clear liquid

C

0.2

clear liquid

D

1.0

clear liquid, viscous

E

2.0

clear gel

With 2.0 g of test item being mixed into 1.64 g of n-octanol, a clear gel with a total weight of 3.64 g has been formed. This is equivalent to 54.9% (w/w) of test item in solution/gel.

As the density of the n-octanol will significantly increase with addition of the test item, it can be concluded that n-octanol solubility is about 549 g/L, resulting in a gel. Due to the fact, that the formation of the gel is a continuous process and no discrete point can be identified at which dissolution in n-octanol switches to gelling, the n-octanol solubility can be approximated to > 549 g/L.
