Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Currently viewing:

Administrative data

Endpoint:
toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
1978
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Comparable to guideline study with acceptable rerictions, no analytical measurements, exposure period of 8 days is still acceptable for this slowly growing cyanobacteria (should still be in log phase at the end of test)

serial dillution each 2 fold
Details on test conditions:
in vessel 5 ml dilluted substance + 5ml algae suspensio are added up to a volume of 50 ml
10 ml are transferred to the test vessel: (Kapsenberg-Kulturröhrchen, 18x180 mm)

Algae suspension
- Initial cells density was adjusted to an extintion equal to the Formazin Standard Extintion (for the monochromatic radiation Hg 578 nm (thickness of cuvette)) of TE/F/578 nm = 20

measured effect parameters
- Determination of cell concentrations: spectrophotometer: Extintion of the monochromatic radiation Hg 578 nm Hg
- if a change of colour or turbidity was observed, the radiation was adapted to Hg 691 nm or 436 nm

toxicity of ethylamine to algae was determined in an 8 day study conducted according to Bringmann (DIN 38412 part 9) with cultures of the Microcystis aeruginosa. The TT (NOEC) value based on biomass was 1.3 mg/L (nominal).

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
ethylamine in neutralised solution shows medium toxicity to microcystis aeruginosa
Executive summary:

Test Organism: Microcystis aeruginosa

Test Type: Static

8 d TT (NOEC):  1.3 mg/L nominal ethylamine, neutralised

Endpoint(s) Effected: Biomass
