Description of key information

The toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria is assessed based on read-across from the close structural analogue Citronellyl Acetate (CAS# 150 -84 -5) to Citronellyl Acetate Multi.

Algae test with Citronellyl Acetate mono

For Citronellyl Acetate mono, the toxicity to aquatic algae was examined in a study according to OECD TG 201, and in compliance with GLP criteria. Fresh cultures of algae were exposed to a range of test substance solutions for 72 hours. As the test substance is poorly soluble in water, a saturated solution was prepared at a loading rate of 100 mg/L, and this solution further diluted to obtain nominal target concentrations of 0 (control), 1.0, 3.2, 10, 32, and 100 mg/L. Nominal concentrations were analytically verified at the start (0h) and at the end (72h) of the test. The measured concentration of the 100% saturated solution at the start of the test was 7.20 mg/L and ranged from 6.7 to 7.2% of the nominal dilution concentrations in the test groups above the LOQ. The test item was not detected in any samples at the end of exposure, with or without algae, and therefore mean measured concentrations could not be calculated. The test concentrations were expressed as measured initial concentrations taking into consideration that, due to the instability of the test item, the results should be considered as the effect of the parent test item and all degradation products. Chlorophyll-a-fluorescence was measured at 0, 24, 48, and 72 hours after exposure and inhibition of growth rate calculated from cell densities. The test was valid.

Inhibitory effects on algal growth were only observed in the highest test group (33.9% inhibition of growth rate). Based on these findings, the 72-h ErC50 and ErC10 values were determined at >7.2 mg/L, and 3.83 mg/L, respectively. The 72-h NOErC was 2.22 mg/L.
