Any other information on results incl. tables

50 mm container at 165 °C: (equivalent to a 100 mm container at 140 °C):

The test substance shows significant exothermic activity with the centre of the sample reaching a maximum temperature of 376 °C after approximately 18 hours. This behaviour constitutes a positive result, requiring further testing using the 25mm container at 140 °C.

25 mm container at 140 °C:

The test substance shows no significant exothermic activity, with the temperature at the centre of the sample only reaching a maximum of 140 °C. This behaviour constitutes a negative result, requiring further testing using the 100mm container at 120 °C.

50 mm container at 142 °C: (equivalent to a 100 mm container at 120 °C)

The test substance shows no significant exothermic activity, with the temperature at the centre of the sample reaching a maximum of 142.5 °C. As this constitutes a negative result, no further testing was necessary.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
- The test substance displays significant exothermic activity when tested in the 50 mm cubic wire mesh container at 165 °C (equivalent to a 100 mm container at 140 °C), but tests using the 25 mm container at 140 °C and the 50 mm container at 142 °C (equivalent to a 100 mm container at 120 °C) were both negative.
- In accordance with the criteria of UN Test N.4, the test substance is classified as a Category 2 self-heating substance (GHS) and Division 4.2, Packing Group III (transport), if packaged in sizes greater than 3 cubic metres.
- In accordance with the criteria of UN Test N.4, the test substance is exempt from classification as a self-heating substance if packaged in sizes of not more than 3 cubic metres.
Executive summary:

The substance was tested for its self-heating properties following UN Test N.4.

The test substance displays significant exothermic activity when tested in the 50 mm cubic wire mesh container at 165 °C (equivalent to a 100 mm container at 140 °C), but tests using the 25 mm container at 140 °C and the 50 mm container at 142 °C (equivalent to a 100 mm container at 120 °C) were both negative.

According to these results and to the criteria in UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.4 (Test method for self-heating substances):

- the substance is classified as a self-heating substance, Category 2, for package sizes > 3 m3.

- The substance is not classified as a self-heating substance for package sizes ≤ 3 m3
