Experimental results for propane-1-thiol were identified for two trophic levels: fish and aquatic invertebrates. Acute ecotoxicity data have been read across from ethanethiol for all three trophic levels. Propane-1-thiol and ethanethiol are both mercaptans characterised by an SH functional group with a straight aliphatic carbon chain and similarities between the physico-chemical, environmental fate and ecotox of these substance are apparent. Data on ethanethiol are read across to demonstrate the similarity in toxicity between the two substances, and to demonstrate the relative sensitivity of the different trophic levels. Invertebrates are the most sensitive taxon to ethanethiol. Invertebrates are also more sensitive than fish to propane-1-thiol. Although algal data are not available for propane-1-thiol, this is not considered critical as invertebrates are expected to be the most sensitive group.
The following sections detail the robust summaries prepared for these studies and any justification for waiving the endpoints in the appropriate sections.
The results of these studies indicate that propane-1-thiol would be classified as Acute and Chronic Category 1 under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, with the hazard statement "very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects".
