Additional information

Substance zinc dipropionate is a salt of propionic acid with the inorganic cation zinc. It is a solid, inorganic salt. As the substance started decomposing at > 240°C before melting or boiling, no melting and no boiling point could be determined. The relative density of zinc dipropionate is 1.67. Zinc dipropionate does not have a melting point, but decomposes before melting at a temperature > 240°C. Thus, volatilisation from the liquid phase is not possible. Volatilisation via sublimation is not known for carboxylic acid zinc salts. In view of this, the volatility of this substance can therefore be safely assumed to be negligible and experimental testing is not feasible. The calculated value of 0.0284 Pa at 25°C is used as replacement value in accordance with 7.5 column 2. The value was calculated using EPI Suite model MPBPVP v1.43 (Modified Grain Method). The surface tension of zinc dipropionate is 72.76 mN/m and therefore the substance is considered to be non surface active, since the criterion for surface activity is a surface tension < 60 mN/m. Water solubility of zinc dipropionate was determined to be 40.5 g/L at 30°C according to regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, A.6, ‘flask method’. The partition coefficient of this substance is not considered to be relevant. Zinc dipropionate is not highly flammable.

Pyrophoric properties, flammability in contact with water, flash point, explosive properties, self-ignition temperature and oxidising properties are not relevant for this substance in accordance with column 2 of the respective sections of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annexes VII to IIIV.

Product form of zinc dipropionate is pellets (prills). The granulometry of a representative test material is summarized as follows:

D50 = 49µm

D90 = 723µm

Justification for classification or non classification

According to the criteria of REGULATION (EC) No 1272/2008, zinc dipropionate does not have to be classified and has no obligatory labelling requirement for physico-chemical properties. Zinc dipropionate is not flammable, explosive properties are considered non-relevant for zinc dipropionate based on lack of functional groups and oxidizing properties are considered non-relevant based on the chemical structure of the substance. In the long experience with zinc dipropionate, no indications on metal corrosivity became evident.
