Reference
Endpoint:
short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
weight of evidence
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Crangon crangon used as test organism
Test performed in filtered sea-water
Test temperature 15°C
semi-static exposure, daily water renewal
Exposure for about 110 hours, tanks were inspected frequently and EC50s were calculated
GLP compliance:
no
Analytical monitoring:
no
Test organisms (species):
Crangon crangon
Test type:
semi-static
Water media type:
saltwater
Total exposure duration:
110 h
Remarks on exposure duration:
Total test duration estimated from Fig. 1, only result for 48 hours extrapolated
Test temperature:
15°C
Details on test conditions:
TEST SYSTEM
- Test vessel: Perspex tanks
- Type (delete if not applicable): open / closed
- Material, size, headspace, fill volume:
- Aeration: yes, gentle aeration
- Renewal rate of test solution (frequency): every 24 hours
- No. of organisms per vessel: not reported
- No. of vessels per concentration (replicates): not reported
- No. of vessels per control (replicates): not reported

TEST MEDIUM / WATER PARAMETERS
- Source/preparation of dilution water: natural filtered seawater

OTHER TEST CONDITIONS
- Photoperiod: not reported
- Light intensity:not reported

EFFECT PARAMETERS MEASURED (with observation intervals if applicable) : mortality, "tanks were inspected frequently". The LC50 was calculated for each observation interval and the 48 hour LC50 was determined by regression analysis.

RANGE-FINDING STUDY
- Results used to determine the conditions for the definitive study: A range-finding test was performed, but the details were not reported.
Duration:
48 h
Dose descriptor:
LC50
Effect conc.:
600 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
mortality
Conclusions:
48-h LC50 Crangon crangon: 600 mg/L

Description of key information

EC50: 600 mg/L

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Marine water invertebrates

Marine water invertebrates
Effect concentration:
600 mg/L

Additional information

Data from three (marine) invertebrates are available. In a test with (Crangon crangon) the 48 -hour EC50 was experimentally determined to be 600 mg/L. The data demonstrate that invertebrates are less sensitive when compared to algae. Two further limits test showed that further invertebrates were also not sensitive at 1 and 2 mg/L. Hence further testing was considered not necessary.
