Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Several reliable studies (Klimisch 2) were found on toxic effect of Se. The information is used as supporting information in the secondary poisoning assessment of Se-enriched diets (selenium applied as seleno-DL-methionine) on mammals and reptiles.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No significant effects were detected on the mortality, growth and egg production ofLamprophis fuliginosus(brown house snake) at 23 mg Se/kg food (dry mass; Hopkins et al., 2004) or on mortality and growth of the lizardSceloporus occidentalisat 14.7 mg Se/kg food (dry mass; Hopkins et al., 2005).

Additionally, data on dietary toxicity for eight mammal species based on food naturally enriched in Se or amended with various Se-compounds. Reported NOECoral values for growth, reproduction and mortality vary between 1 and 15 mg Se/kg food.

It should be noted that US EPA (2007) identified a large amount of additional studies, with NOEC-values up to 300 mg Se/kg diet. These studies were not all screened for their reliability because no values below the critical NOECoral for birds (1 mg Se/kg food) were reported.
