Description of key information

The ions of barium 4 -dodecylphenolate determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Reliable data available for soluble barium substances indicate a low (if any) toxic potential of barium cations since the 3-h NOEC for respiration inhibition of barium chloride is >= 1000 mg/L (test limit of OECD TG 209). Adverse effects of dodecylphenolate on bacterial respiration were not observed at and above the water solubility limit. Thus, the potential of barium 4 -dodecylphenolate for toxicity to aquatic microorganisms is expected to be low. A hazard could not be identified.
