Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2013
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Justification for type of information:
The analysis has been run on one of the "Rape oil, sulfated, sodium salt" representative sample.
Please, see section 13.2 for further details justifing the read-across approach from this supporting substance.
Qualifier:
according to
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
Qualifier:
according to
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
GLP compliance:
not specified
Type of method:
ring method
Key result
Surface tension:
33.3 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
0.09 g/L

Six determinations were performed at 20 °C ± 0.5 °C, temperature at which the tabulate value for water is 72.75 mN/m.

The results are summarized below:

Measurement 1 = 32.7 mN/m

Measurement 2 = 33.7 mN/m

Measurement 3 = 33.1 mN/m

Measurement 4 = 32.9 mN/m

Measurement 5 = 33.5 mN/m

Measurement 6 = 33.3 mN/m

Mean value = 33.2 mN/m

Std. Dev. = 0.37

RSD = 1.13%

After zero asjustment, the surface tension of distilled water was determined to be 72.45 mN/m, and the calibration factor was calculated to be 1.0041. The surface tension at 20°C of the tested substance solution therefore resulted to be 33.3 mN/m.

Conclusions:
The surface tension of an aqueous solution of the test item (consisting of 90% v/v of a saturated solution of the test item in water) has been determined to be 33.3 mN/m at 20 °C.

It is difficut to determine the concentration of the test item in the tested solution, given the range of solubility found (see section 4.8). Anyway, referring to the Key value for the chemical safety assessment defined for water solubility, the concentration can be evaluated and results to be 0.09 g/L.
Executive summary:

The surface tension of an aqueous solution of the test item (estimated to be 0.09 g/L) has been assessed according to OECD TG 115 / EU method A.5 and found to be 33.3 mN/m at 20 °C.

Description of key information

Surface tension of an aqueous solution, consisting of 90% v/v of a saturated solution of the test item in water (estimated 0.09 g/L), at 20°C: 33.3 mN/m.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:

Additional information

The surface tension of an aqueous solution of Rape oil, sulfated, sodium salt (consisting of 90% v/v of a saturated solution of the test item in water) has been assessed according to OECD TG 115 / EU method A.5 and found to be 33.3 mN/m at 20 °C.

Being the test item an analogue of the substance, this value is considered valid also for the substance (for more details, see section 13 - Similarity Report).
