Results

a)       Calibration

The literature value for the surface tension of water at 22oC = 72.4mN/m

The average measured surface tension of the blank water at 22oC = 72.6mN/m

Therefore,

Øb = 72.4 = 0.9972

72.6

b)       Test solution

The time between preparation of the test solution 1 was 15 minutes and for test solution 2, 72 minutes. The mean measured surface tension was 55.6mN/m

Test solution surface tension corrected for calibration factor:

= 55.6 mN/m x 0.9972

= 55.4 mN/m

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The surface tension of the substance in a 90% saturated aqueous solution was 55.4 mN/m at 22°C.
Executive summary:

The surface tension of a 90% saturated aqueous solution of test sample was measured using the OECD harmonised ring method. Following correction by a calibration factor, the force required to detach the platinum ring from the surface of a 90% saturated aqueous solution was deternmined to be 55.4 mN/m at a temperature of 22oC.
