Description of key information
Read-across to the assessment entities soluble zinc substances and m-toluic acid is applied for the assessment of zinc toluate since the ions of zinc toluate determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Reliable data available for soluble zinc substances and toluate indicate that the moiety of ecotoloxicological concern are zinc cations since a NOEC for nitrification inhibition of 0.1 mg Zn/L was derived (ISO 9509 nitrification inhibition test). An EC10 of 543 mg/L m-toluic acid (nominal) was derived for the 3-h respiration inhibition of activated sludge whereas the corresponding EC50 is above the highest test concentration of 1000 mg/L. Further, m-toluic acid is ready biodegradable.
