Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Conclusions:
The key value retained for the toxicity of the target substance to microorganisms is an EC10 (3 h) of > 1000 mg/L, based on the available experimental study for a structurally and chemically closely related source substance (nominal, OECD 209, activated sludge respiration); read-across

Description of key information

EC10 (3 h) > 1000 mg/L (nominal, OECD 209, activated sludge microorganisms); read-across

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

There is no study available, in which the toxicity of lauryl laurate (CAS 13945-76-1) to activated sludge microorganisms was investigated. Therefore, read-across to the structurally closely related source substancefatty acids, C8-10, C12-18-alky esters (CAS 95912-86-0) was conductedin accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5. The source substance is characterized by similar fatty acid and alcohol components and is therefore considered a suitable representative for the assessment of the toxicity of the target substance to microorganisms. A detailed justification of the analogue approach is provided in IUCLID section 13.

In a static respiration inhibition test according to OECD guideline 209 and GLP, activated sludge at an initial concentration of 1.5 g/L dry mass was exposed to five test item concentrations in a geometric series with a spacing factor of 2 ranging from nominal 62.5 to 1000 mg/L for 3 h. After incubation, oxygen consumption in the test vessels was measured. No effects were observed based on the respiration rate, resulting in an EC10 (3 h) of > 1000 mg/L.

Based on the structural and chemical similarity of the target and source substance, the target substance is expected to exhibit a similar ecotoxicological profile as the selected source substance. Therefore, it can be concluded thatthe target substance lauryl laurate (CAS 13945-76-1) does not have inhibitory effects on the activity of activated sludge microorganisms and an inhibition of degradation in sewage treatment plants is therefore not expected.
