Administrative data

First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Remove patient to fresh air. Symptomatic treatment.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
Emergency measure - Skin: Wash with water. Symptomatic treatment.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Seek immediate medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder and water may be used.

Product arising from burning: Combustion products may contain carbon oxides together with
iodine containing compounds.

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: Wear full protective clothing and a self-contained breathing
apparatus.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Evacuate personnel from the immediate vicinity.

Wear suitable protective clothing (cf 2.3.1). Absorb
spillage with a suitable inert material (eg sand or soil).

Transfer material to waste containers or use an approved
sealed industrial vacuum machine. Label waste containers as
for the substance.

Clean the spillage area with water. Do not allow spillages
to enter surface drainage systems. Dispose of waste in
accordance with local regulations at a controlled landfill
site or approved incineration facility.

Handling and storage

Handling: Store, handle and use under conditions of good industrial
hygiene in conformity with local regulations. Avoid exposure
by ingestion, inhalation and skin and eye contact. Use
engineering controls where possible to minimise exposure. If
exposure cannot be prevented or adequately controlled, use
eye protection (eg goggles), imnpervious gloves, and
protective clothing and footwear.

If respiratory equipment is required, it must be capable of
adequately controlling exposure, be suitable for the purpose
and conform to appropriate standards. A dust mask and filter
conforming to EN49 FFP1 is recommended.

Storage: Store in sealed containers at room temperature.

Avoid sources of ignition.

Keep containers tightly closed when not in use.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: The substance will be packaged in 200 litre drums with an
inner polyethylene liner.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: None reported

Chemical reaction with water: The substance hydrolyses to acetic acid and the free alcohol
which rearranges to give a furan ester.

Dust explosion: Not applicable to a liquid.

Dust explosion determined by test: N

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Recovery of spilt material for reuse may be possible,
especially if the substance is uncontaminated, but no method
has been developed.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: No method of neutralisation of the hazardous properties is
known. Hydrolysis under alkaline conditions is a possibility
but the effects of the hydrolysis products are not fully
known.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Disposal of substance absorbed on an inert material at a
controlled landfill site is possible (A650).

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Disposal by incineration is possible at an approved
facility.

Waste gas treatment to remove sulfur oxides and halogen
products should be used (A661).

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Not recommended.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The substance will not enter the public domain.
