Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Toxicity to fish:

Short-term:

The toxicity of Nonane-1,9-diol to Danio rerio was determined in a reliable limit test according to OECD 203 and in compliance with GLP. The effect values LC50 and NOEC were both determined as > 100 mg/L of Nonane-1,9-diol based on nominal concentrations.

Long-term:

The study does not need to be conducted based on low toxicity in the short-term test (see above) and for reasons of animal welfare (REACH regulation, Annex XI, section 9.1.6).

Toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

Short-term:

The toxicity of the test substance on Daphnia magna was determined according to OECD 202 and in compliance with GLP. The EC50 (48 hours) was determined with > 100 mg/L (nominal).

Long-term:

The toxicity of the test substance on Daphnia magna was determined according to OECD 211 and in compliance with GLP. The lowest observed effect value for mortality of adults and reproduction was a NOEC of 0.305 mg/L (nominal), equivalent with 0.115 mg/L (measured).

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria:

The toxicity of Nonane-1,9-diol on Desmodesmus subspicatus was determined in a reliable GLP study according to OECD 201. Inhibition of growth rate (ErC50) and biomass (EyC50) of the algae were observed at > 100 mg/L and 72 mg/L, respectively. The NOEC and LOEC of both, inhibition of growth rate and biomass, were 50 mg/L and 100 mg/L, respectively.

Toxicity to microorganisms:

The activated sludge respiration inhibition test was waived, because a biodegradation study according to OECD 301 B and in compliance with GLP that included a toxicity control was available. Nonane-1,9-diol was observed to have no inhibitory effects on microorganisms up to a concentration of 20 mg/L TOC (% degradation: 93.3% after 14 days).
